Located at an altitude of about 2500 feet above sea level. Katra is the base camp for the yatra to the holy shrine of shri mata vaishno devi ji. This is the last point uphill which any type of modern transport can go. (Excepted the recently started helicopter service, which takes the pilgrims right till sanjhi chhat, just a couple of kilomeaters from the holy shrine). Therefor for all practical purposes, katra serves as the base camp.

From here a trek of around 12 km takes a pilgrim to the holy shrine. One can under take this trek on foot or on horses/ponies or on palanquins(palkies or dollies). While most of the pilgrims prefer to go on foot,some who find it difficult to negotiate the climb hire a pony or a palanquin.

In Kashmir  valley-shri amarnath cave is a most religious center of Hindu, lies 48km from pahalgam at the height of 3380 m. Here ice “shivling” forms and vanishes gradually by nature every  year on the day of “Raksha bandhan” a big fair is held. The shiv lings forms in a cave, which is 60 feet long and 25-30 feet wide and 15 feet high. Here Mata Parvati and shiv Ganesh “Peeth also forms by ice stick yatra” is performed on shrawan poornima, which start from Srinagar in a procession en route via pampor-awantipur  big-bihara-anantnag-mattan-pahalgaom (main base camp) chandanwadi(14 km) shesh nag (14km)-panchtarni (15km) upto amaranth cave (5km). Pilgrims should bring with hen sufficient woolen grments, food, shoes for walking on ice, rain coat,wooden stick ect. Another route is off sonmarg and passes through zozila and reaches amaranth via rangabaltal and girimarg.

(46km from shrinagar) after 10 km journey on the way to baramula from Srinagar a road branches off to the left and goes stairs amid green wheat and maize fields to gulmarg lying at the slope of the pirpanjar range. Poplar tree stands both side of the road, far away lies the snow covered ranges-attitude 2730 m. It is also the country’s premier winter sports resort. A rope way (5km long) has been made introduced. It is also famous fora valley of flowers. There is good arrangements of boarding and loading in gulmarg. J&K dept. Of tourism runs a helicopter service to gulmarg from Srinagar.
