Holi is celebrated on purnima of falgun month according to Hindi calendar which falls in the month of march. There is a symbolic legend to explain why holi is celebrated. According to legend there was a Asura called hiranyakashipu. who wanted to kill his son prahlad as a punishment for praying lord vishnu. So he asked her sister holika to carry his son on her lap and sit on bonfire. Holika had the power that fire couldn’t burn her. but she died in fire and prahlad was saved. So that the first night of holi is celebrated by praying bonfire wishing that fire will burn all the evil inside us. The next day of that is celebrated with colors
