Jammu and Kashmir tourism. The earthly paradise in India the elegant pleasure garden for tourists. It is a state in a far-north of the republic of India. The state is made up of three territories-jammu, Kashmir and laddakh. It is a mountainous area in the north west Himalayas-stands 1585 m to 1829 m high above mean sea level and stretches 129 km in length and 40 km breadth. It is a border state and is surrounded by Pakistan(east side),Afghanistan(north west side)and china(north and east side). The principal ranges have separated Kashmir from the Indian plains.

According to the purans, prajapati kashyap killed asura, who just sprung from water,with the assistance of Brahma,Vishnu and Shiva. Satisar was the abode of the demons, who were oppressing the demons and build up a human habitation there and Kashmir was thus named after kashyap or kashyap-mar or “kashyap-mir”.
Jammu the 2nd largest city, and the summer capital of the state. Also a important part of jammu and Kashmir tourism. It is situated on a Shivalik hill at the height of 305 m above mean sea level,with the river tawi following by at the foot of hill. It is said that jamboolochan found Jammu in the 9th cencury-bc. The city has long been a center of India culture and arts. It is specially famous for its exquisite pahari school miniature paintings.
Now a days it is famous as a trade center. but to the tourist jammu is known as the gateway to Kashmir. It is mostly inhabited by the Hindus (including dongras) and the sikh. Jammu may be called the land of forts and temples. It is situated on delhi shri nager national highway 1A, and is 586 km away from delhi. The new town jammu tawi has been build on the bank of river tawi, centering round the railway station.

Shri Maa Vaishno Devi Yatra
Located at an altitude of about 2500 feet above sea level. Katra is the base camp for the yatra to the holy shrine of shri mata vaishno devi ji. This is the last point uphill which any type of modern transport can go. (Excepted the recently started helicopter service, which takes the pilgrims right till sanjhi chhat, just a couple of kilomeaters from the holy shrine). Therefor for all practical purposes, katra serves as the base camp.
From here a trek of around 12 km takes a pilgrim to the holy shrine. One can under take this trek on foot or on horses/ponies or on palanquins(palkies or dollies). While most of the pilgrims prefer to go on foot,some who find it difficult to negotiate the climb hire a pony or a palanquin.
A Tour of Srinagar
Samrat Ashok found Shrinager in 3th century BC. Praverasen II (79-139AD] found the present city of Shrinager it was then called “pravarapara”lahitadiya Mukhtapida was the most illustrious ruler of the Hindu period, which ended in 1339. King Zain-Ul-Abidin (1420-70 AD) was popularly known as “Badshah” was a great pattern of Sanskrit Akbar capture the valley from the Mughals. He endowed shrinager with beautiful garden and mosques. The Sikhs overthrew the last Muslims ruler in the reign in Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1819. In 1846 the Dogras secured the sovereignty of Kashmir from the Britishers under the treaty of Amritsar
Shri Amarnath ji
In Kashmir valley-shri amarnath cave is a most religious center of Hindu, lies 48km from pahalgam at the height of 3380 m. Here ice “shivling” forms and vanishes gradually by nature every year on the day of “Raksha bandhan” a big fair is held. The shiv lings forms in a cave, which is 60 feet long and 25-30 feet wide and 15 feet high. Here Mata Parvati and shiv Ganesh “Peeth also forms by ice stick yatra” is performed on shrawan poornima, which start from Srinagar in a procession en route via pampor-awantipur big-bihara-anantnag-mattan-pahalgaom (main base camp) chandanwadi(14 km) shesh nag (14km)-panchtarni (15km) upto amaranth cave (5km). Pilgrims should bring with hen sufficient woolen grments, food, shoes for walking on ice, rain coat,wooden stick ect. Another route is off sonmarg and passes through zozila and reaches amaranth via rangabaltal and girimarg.
Kargil Jammu and Kashmir Tourism
(46km from shrinagar) after 10 km journey on the way to baramula from Srinagar a road branches off to the left and goes stairs amid green wheat and maize fields to gulmarg lying at the slope of the pirpanjar range. Poplar tree stands both side of the road, far away lies the snow covered ranges-attitude 2730 m. It is also the country’s premier winter sports resort. A rope way (5km long) has been made introduced. It is also famous fora valley of flowers. There is good arrangements of boarding and loading in gulmarg. J&K dept. Of tourism runs a helicopter service to gulmarg from Srinagar.
